'Media regulation is failing everyone.' How far do you agree with this statement? [15]
Media in China is being regulated by their government, which I think is giving a negative effect to everyone. TV shows, movies, and even social media applications are being regulated by the Chinese government. And the Chinese government media regulations are failing their younger generations.
A case study would be TikTok, released in 2018 in the US. In China, TikTok is known as Douyin, which was released in 2016. This social media application is owned by ByteDance and have about 500 million daily users in China. They regulate this social media by locking the app form 10pm to 6am, limiting the use to only 40 minutes a day, and only promoting certain contents in the social media such as
Analyse the ways in which contemporary media regulation reflects its period [15]
There are many ways in which contemporary media regulations reflects its period especially in movies which are targeted towards the younger audiences. The contemporary media regulation towards children's movies became tighter and movies, which are targeted towards the younger audience, became even more family friendly compared to traditional media regulations.
An example of this would be cigarettes in children's movies. Back in the early 1950s, the movie No Smoking produced by Disney featured their character, Goofy, who is being a heavy smoker. Disney does not have an outright ban on cigarette imagery, its official policy allows for depictions of historical figures who may have smoked or to "portray cigarette smoking in an unfavorable light or emphasize the negative consequences". In contemporary media, Disney does not show any tobacco imagery because after 2015 they prohibit having cigarettes in movies rated pg-13. In another streaming platform, starting from 2019 Netflix made a regulation which says Netflix does not allow contents that are pg-13 to contain any form of cigarettes or tobacco.
Another example of how contemporary media regulation reflects its period is the increase in amount of LGBT content in contemporary media. Back then LGBT content was not very popular, which tells that regulations towards LGBT content in media were not really shown. But on contemporary media which contains many LGBT content, the regulators would need to react to this. The movie Lightyear (2022) by Disney, was not aired in some countries. One of the countries which Lightyear was not aired is Indonesia. The Indonesian government did not air Lightyear due to the LGBT content which is featured in the movie which goes against Indonesian ideology.
