Self Reflection Essay
Celebrity Fitness is a fitness center or company located in some countries in Asia and Australia. Top Gun: Maverick is a sequel of the movie Top Gun starring Tom Cruise in 1986.
My advertisement idea is about a Gym Membership from Celebrity Fitness Gym collaborating with the movie Top Gun: Maverick. The advertisement would start off with a fat guy and a fat girl, who is the fat guy's girlfriend, watching Top Gun: Maverick beach scene on a couch, at home. The camera would show the reaction of the girl, obsessed all over one of the actors' body in the scene. This would cause the fat guy to get jealous and leave his girlfriend to go to the gym. And at the end, Tom Cruise, the star of the movie Top Gun: Maverick, would be in the gym saying the slogan to end the advert.
This advertisement would deliver a message for men to take care of themselves as the target audience is male adults with an overly body weight, similar to the main character, around Asia since Celebrity Fitness Gym is located mostly in Asian countries and Australia.
My product will challenge convention because gym advertisements would usually have a serious, muscular, and dark theme. To challenge convention, I used an overweight character as a main. This is because I want the audience to be able to relate or prevent themselves from being in that situation. The oversized characters are shown to be messy with casual clothing. These are a stereotype of overweight person.
My advert uses gratification of personal identity as audiences could relate to the main character being lazy. Audience could also use personal identity gratification theory to find role model, as Tom Cruise is in the advertisement attracting hi fans to watch his advert. Specific type of audience is also targeted, male adults, as the advert appeal to them through gratification of personal identity. And this advert will be shown on TV channels, any kind, and YouTube since these are the two most visited media by the targeted audience.
This project has improved how I view meaning in media. At the start I was not really concerned on the meaning when thinking of an advertisement, but as everyone is making progress, I noticed that every aspect of my advert gives meaning to audience whether it is intentional or not. I have changed many aspects to the advert so that I could control whether or not a scene would give a meaning or which meaning would each scene give and how by using camera angles & movements, editing, sound and mise en scene.
Lastly, I used many medias and technologies to help my projects. One of them is Adobe Premiere Pro which I used to edit videos of camera angles and movement. Since I am used to using Adobe Premiere Pro, it had saved me a lot of time because I am familiar with the settings, keybinds, and layout of the software.
I also used the website blogger.com to make my blog where I put my notes, work and even progresses of my project which help me stay on track on the project. This website has got me really into the project, even though time was really an enemy, by saving progresses and changes of the project.
Another form of technology I used is YouTube which had helped me do my research on fitness advertisement which I have analysed in my blog. This site also helped me understand more on media terms as I used it to watch some theories and examples of editing which have increased my vocabulary on media terms.
