Todorov's Narrative Theory on Hustle

Todorov's Narrative Theory

Todorov's Narrative theory is the five stages of narratives in a story or how a story is divided and structured into five different stages. This theory was named after the creator himself, Tzvetan Todorov. What I have learned about Todorov's narrative theory is that there are five stages of narration which starts with equilibrium and ends with a new equilibrium which is different from the first one (usually having a good ending). But some movies such as Avengers: Infinity War has a bad new equilibrium which sets up the next Avengers movie.

The five different stages of Todorov's narrative theory are;
- Equilibrium
- Disruption
- Recognition of disruption
- Recovery
- New Equilibrium

The movie that I will be analyzing today is the movie Hustle which was produced by Netflix, in 2020
Spoiler Alert if you readers have not watch the Netflix movie, Hustle, yet.

EQUILIBRIUM:
 - A scout named Stanley Sugarman trying to do his job to find recruits for the NBA draft for the Philadelphia 76ers.
DISRUPTION:
 - Head/owner of the Philadelphia 76ers, who trusted the scout, passed away.
RECOGNITION:
 - Heard the news of death from radio.
REPAIR:
 - Trying to make sure that the Philadelphia 76ers get the best recruit for the draft.

NEW EQUILIBRIUM:
 - Turned into a coach who drafted and trained a solid player for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Now, this is what I found when I watched the movie for the second time. People could have different answers on this theory depending on their perspective towards the movie. And as shown in the new equilibrium, the movie ended up with a good ending.
