Levi Strauss Binary Opposite Theory
Levi Strauss proposed a theory called the binary opposite theory. It is basically a theory about all media having opposing sides being narrated or shown throughout the media. This theory, same like the previous theory in my blog, was also named after the creator of the theory which is Levi Strauss, a French anthropologist. In his theory, Levi Strauss stated that there would be a lot of opposing sides in a media like good vs bad, truth vs lies, and trust vs betrayal.
In this blog I will be explaining about the Levi Strauss Theory by using examples from the movie Coach Carter (2005).
HERE ARE THE EXAMPLES OF LEVI STRAUSS THEORY FROM COACH CARTER:
CALM vs CHAOTIC:
In the movie Coach Carter, it is shown that Coach Ken Carter is mostly calm and confident throughout the whole movie even when he is dealing with the chaotic students of Richmond High School who were willing to fight their coach on a hand to hand combat. In the end Coach Carter, who remained calm, was able to control and inspire the student athletes of Richmond High School while earning their respect in the process.
INTELEGENCE vs STUPIDITY:
It is shown that the students who are in the Basketball team of Richmond High are dealing with academic problems in school. Some of them are not even trying to attend classes. Coach Carter, on the other hand, notices this and closes the gym unless they start to attend classes and manage to get an average score of 3.0 in each subject. At first students, parents and even teachers were complaining about the fact that the gym were closed. And eventually the gym was forced to be opened, though Coach Carter was surprised when he saw his students studying inside the gym.
CONFIDENCE vs FEAR:
The movie shows that the students in Richmond High who seemed very fearless actually have fears and are actually weak. On the other side Coach Carter, who is shown to be very professional on handling the students in Richmond High, shows bravery and confidence by the way he does things. In the end, the students finally admit that they are afraid of being powerful beyond measure.
And Coach Carter eventually managed to boost the confidence of his students, changing their life.
